Human Design without a birth time
Most of your chart is fixed by your birth date. Some of it changes by the hour. Here's exactly which parts — measured on 3,000 random birthdays.
The short answer
You can learn a lot from a Human Design chart without a birth time — but not everything. Planets move at very different speeds. The Sun takes about 5.7 days to cross one gate, while the Moon crosses a gate in roughly ten hours. So the slow parts of your chart are almost certainly right, and the fast parts are a guess.
We measured this directly: for 3,000 random birth dates between 1950 and 2008, we calculated a chart for every hour of the day and checked what stayed the same.
| Part of the chart | Same at every hour of the birth day |
|---|---|
| Personality Sun gate | 84% of birth dates |
| Inner authority | 69% |
| Incarnation cross | 65% |
| Type | 62% |
| Definition | 47% |
| All defined channels | 11% |
| Profile | 0% — it always changes during the day |
Why the profile always changes
Your profile comes from the line of your Personality Sun and of your Design Sun. A line is one sixth of a gate — just under one degree of the zodiac — and the Sun moves about one degree a day. So during any single day, the Sun crosses at least one line boundary. In our sample, almost every birth date spanned three different profiles from midnight to midnight.
That's why a profile from a chart with an unknown time should be treated as a range, not an answer. If it says 2/4, the real one could also be the profile just before or after it — for example 1/4 or 2/5.
What you can rely on
- Your Personality Sun and Earth gates. These are the strongest single themes in your chart. You can find your Sun gate from your birthday alone; only birthdays close to a gate change (about one in six) can go either way.
- Most planets' gates. Mercury through Pluto move slowly enough that their gates rarely change within a day.
- Very often your type and authority. For about six in ten birthdays the type is the same all day, and for seven in ten the authority is. If a noon chart shows a Generator with Sacral authority, there's a good chance it's right — but not a certainty.
What to treat as provisional
- The Moon's gate. It moves about 13° a day — two or three gates.
- Channels that depend on the Moon or a fast-moving Design planet. A single gate can complete or break a channel, which can change which centers are defined — and with them your type, authority and definition.
- The profile, as above, and therefore the angle of your incarnation cross.
How our calculator handles an unknown time
If you tick "I don't know the birth time", we calculate your chart for 12:00 noon local time — the middle of the day, so the chart is as close as possible to every possible time — and mark the result as calculated for noon, so you know which parts to treat as provisional.
How to find your birth time
- Your birth certificate. In the US, the long-form ("vault") certificate from your state's vital records office usually lists the time; short-form versions often don't.
- Hospital records, if you know where you were born.
- Family. Parents, grandparents and baby books often remember more precisely than you'd think — "just before lunch" narrows things down a lot.
- Old announcements, letters or a baby bracelet.
Be cautious with "rectification" — estimating a birth time from life events. It's an interpretation, not a record.
A practical way to use a time-unknown chart
- Read the parts that don't change first: your Sun gate, your type (if it's stable) and your strategy.
- Try two charts — one for early morning, one for evening — and see what differs. Anything that's the same in both is solid.
- Experiment with the strategy and authority for a few weeks. If one version clearly fits your lived experience better, that's useful information.
