The planets in Human Design
Every chart has 26 activations: 13 planetary positions at the moment of birth (Personality — what you're conscious of) and 13 from about 88 days earlier (Design — your body and unconscious).
What each planet does in your chart
| Planet | Role in your chart |
|---|---|
| Sun | Your core life force and identity — the gate here is the theme you're here to shine through, consciously. |
| Earth | Your grounding counterbalance to the Sun — the gate here keeps your core theme rooted and practical. |
| Moon | Your unconscious, repetitive drive — the gate here is a need that resurfaces constantly, almost on a schedule. |
| North Node | Your forward-facing direction for this life — the gate here describes a quality you're growing into. |
| South Node | Your past-life comfort zone — the gate here is easy, familiar ground you're meant to grow beyond, not settle back into. |
| Mercury | How you think and communicate — the gate here shapes your natural style of expressing ideas. |
| Venus | What you value and find genuinely beautiful — the gate here colors your taste and your sense of worth. |
| Mars | Your drive and how you act on impulse — the gate here shows where your energy pushes forward first. |
| Jupiter | Where you find meaning, excess, and expansion — the gate here shows what tends to grow beyond its original size in your life. |
| Saturn | Where discipline and consequence show up — the gate here is where life keeps handing you the same lesson until it's mastered. |
| Uranus | Where you break from convention — the gate here shows your specific, unrepeatable streak of originality. |
| Neptune | Where idealism and illusion blur together — the gate here shows what you're prone to romanticizing or fantasizing about. |
| Pluto | Where deep, structural transformation happens — the gate here shows a theme that changes you slowly but permanently. |
Personality vs. Design
Personality activations (shown in black) come from the moment of birth and describe what you know about yourself. Design activations (shown in red) come from the moment the Sun was 88° earlier — about three months before birth — and describe your body and the patterns others see in you before you do.
Questions
Why are there two sets of planets?
Human Design calculates your chart twice: at birth (Personality) and when the Sun was 88° earlier (Design). Together they give 26 activations.
Which planet matters most?
The Sun: it's said to carry about 70% of the influence in a chart, and its gate is the core theme of your Incarnation Cross.
